Society of Illustrators NY Summer Schedule

EARTH: FRAGILE PLANET
(now through July 31)
A nine week exhibit showcasing 120 of the world's most accomplished illustrators giving them a forum to set forth their personal views about the state of the world and the environment. Divided into five categories: earth, energy, air, water, and wildlife, the exhibit consists of multi-media works including original art in both traditional and digital medium, video, 3D, and comics. Artists include Julie Bell, Guy Billout, Steve Brodner, Chris Buzelli, Kinuko Y. Craft, Vincent Di Fate, Jody Hewgill, Sterling Hundley, Anita Kunz, Liz Lomax, Tim O'Brien, Donato Giancola, Ralph Steadman, and many more.

PIRATES, PETTICOATS AND PUFFY SLEEVES
(now through July 31)
What imagery is more dynamic than a hero in a flowing linen shirt crossing rapiers with a black-clad villain?  Stories of men in tights and ladies in torn bodices have long provided artists with excellent opportunities for bravura work.  What better way to showcase the illustrator's craft than by the skillful depiction of the abundant drapery and rich detail of historical costume?

Lecture: HEALTHY STUDIO LIFE WITH ROBERTO PARADA
(June 22, 6:30pm)
Oil painter and illustrator Roberto Parada will share how he made his studio a safer place for himself after being diagnosed with bone marrow failure.  He'll discuss what art supplies to get rid of and why, what to use instead and what he's done in order to keep oil painting in his life safe.
$15 non-members, $10 members, $7 students
RSVP kb@societyillustrators.org or call 212-838-2560

Workshop: CREATING ART WITH HANOCH PIVEN
(July 8, 6:30pm)
Hanoch Piven, multiple award-winning illustrator, will lead a hands-on, collage workshop for anyone who wants to free their inner child.  Piven's workshop will focus on the idea of playing intuitively with objects, maximizing trial-and-error and taking advantage of serendipity, which are all very useful tools to explore any creative medium.  Piven is known for using ordinary objects to create striking celebrity portraits for clients such as Time, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Times and Random House. Although we'll provide some junk for you to play with, attendees must bring their own ordinary objects to be able to work in-class.
$35 non-members, $20 members, $15 students (Limited to 50 people)
RSVP kb@societyillustrators.org or call 212-838-2560

Please share with your members, as well, that on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30-9:30, we host a drawing session for a $15 admission fee, $7 for students. It's an informal evening with live models, a live jazz band, and bar.

The Society of Illustrators will be closed for the month of August .
